Staff at the 13th Note in Glasgow are bidding to reopen the bar under employee ownership after it was permanently closed following strikes

.

It came after members of the trade union staged a 48-hour walkout at the venue – thought to be the first Scottish bar strike in more than 20 years. Workers downed their tools after a vigorous row over pay and were set to continue the industrial action every weekend until August 6. Chef and Unite member of the 13th Note, Nick Troy said: “Two weeks ago, over 20 workers of the 13th Note were informed, mostly via the press, that the owner had decided to close the venue mere hours before scheduled ACAS conciliation talks with our representatives. Since then, we have been placed under serious financial distress - with the owner still failing to pay us legally required notice pay - and have had to deal with the emotional and social impact of losing our livelihoods.

Siannen McIlroy, a 13th Note worker and also the artist SIANNEN who will be playing on Sunday, said: "The 13th Note was the first venue I ever played a gig in, so it has a lot of importance for me beyond being my workplace. It provided an accessible, cultural space for a lot of different music scenes, from those just starting out to established acts.
