Saints boss Johnny O’Brien has challenged his young side to end 2023 on a high, by continuing their fine recent form.
“But we have now made the players aware that we are expecting them to go on a run until at least the turn of the year where we are more consistent with our performances and results.” Saints had the lion’s share of possession pinning Harestanes back but for the most part they were defending well, limiting Saints to only a few shots on target, so it was a surprise when they lost a simple second goal after 26 minutes.
Slack play from McElroy and Lobban deep in the Harestanes half allowed the visitors to break and striker McDowall twisted and turned before scoring past Gallacher, who was a shade unlucky as the ball deflected off his left foot into the net. They almost increased their lead after 55 minutes when debutant May tried to lob Storey from the left hand side of the 18 yard box, but the ball drifted over the crossbar.
Saints had other chances to extend their lead in the final minutes but a mixture of poor finishing and good defending ensured that the score line remained at 3-1 to the home side.
