San Antonio started by dumping Army-grade green dye into the river that lasted until it drained.
Today, San Antonio will celebrate the 54th anniversary of the St. Patrick’s Day event. An estimated 25 gallons of eco-friendly green dye will be sprayed into the river starting at 1 p.m. at Mad Dogs British Pub on River Walk in downtown.
San Antonio’s tradition was started by downtown business leaders who wanted to draw people to the River Walk. Back then, there wasn’t a steady stream of tourists.
