Rod Philpott specializes in designing gowns. His business, Rodney Philpott Designs, is located on Water Street in St. John's. - Andrew RobinsonST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Rod Philpott's fashion journey has been eventful and taken unexpected detours.
He dabbled in creating dresses and gowns when called upon by some of his clients, but it wasn't until after attending a wedding show in Toronto that Philpott committed himself more fully to bridal wear and gowns. Through Rodney Philpott Designs, which has a ground-level store on the west end of Water Street in St. John's, he sells uniquely glamorous garments to a wide range of clients.
Having a career goal to make it in the fashion world is perhaps uncommon for folks who grew up in rural towns in central Newfoundland as Philpott did. He credits in part his grandmother, Elizabeth Hutchings, for piquing his curiosity in designing clothes. Like many people from her generation, she made clothes for herself and her family.
Born in Point of Bay, Newfoundland, which is outside of Botwood. And right now, I live right here on Water Street.Well, I did follow Alexander McQueen and Mugler, but both of them have passed on. I guess Versace is still there, and Dolce & Gabbana. I just watch for all the runway shows.I think that I'm a lot simpler than people think I am. I just like hanging out. I don't go out that much anymore. I don't party. A couch potato with my dogs. That's good enough for me [laughs].
