The organization is currently striving to ramp up volunteerism, which went down considerably during the pandemic
Although the pandemic put a dent in their volunteer numbers, several local St. John Ambulance members received commendations last weekend for sticking it out.
Honorary commissioner of Northeastern Ontario Kevin McCormick said St. John Ambulance volunteers are often mistaken for paid staff. Medical calls are “very often cuts and scrapes – people falling down,” volunteer and award recipient Sarah Bird told Sudbury.com prior to Saturday’s ceremony at local St. John Ambulance headquarters at 328 Albert St.
Fellow volunteer and award recipient Tyson Harris, 21, started volunteering with St. John Ambulance at the age of approximately 15. St. John Ambulance Northeastern Ontario had approximately 50 medical first responder volunteers before the pandemic swept through the world, and they now have around 30.“People move on to other things, they fill the time they gave to us with other things, and we just need to find them, bring them back and rebuild our programs,” she said.
