Picture: REUTERS/ADNAN ABIDISri Lanka’s parliament approved the extension of a state of emergency for a month on Wednesday, an MP said, in a bid to get a grip on a political and economic crisis that has forced a change of leadership.
The protests, which culminated with crowds swarming into the official presidential residence before Rajapaksa fled on July 13, have largely fizzled out. If Rajapaksa returned to Sri Lanka, he might not be protected under law if any charges were filed against him, legal experts said. He has outlined plans to have a donor conference involving India, China and Japan after Sri Lanka secures a lifeline from the IMF. He said on July 18 that negotiations with the IMF were nearing a conclusion.
“And the biggest question of all is whether Beijing will restructure debt to the same extent as other bilateral creditors,” she said.
