Spurs waive Stanley Johnson, working toward giving Bassey standard deal

New Orleans Pelicans' Zion Williamson drives between San Antonio Spurs' Malaki Branham, right, and Charles Bassey as Spurs guard Romeo Langford, left, watches during the second half of an NBA basketball game, Friday, Dec. 2, 2022, in San Antonio. AN ANTONIO - The Spurs are"working" to convert second-year center Charles Bassey’s two-way deal to a standard contract, a league source said Sunday.

Bassey, a San Antonio St. Anthony alumnus, gives the Spurs depth at center behind Zach Collins, who moved to the starting lineup after they traded Jakob Poeltl to Toronto last week. Johnson played well for the Spurs, appearing in 30 games and averaging 5.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 15.6 minutes per game.
