Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber may have set the nation's pulses racing when he excluded Handre Pollard and Lukhanyo Am when the 2023 Rugby World Cup squad on Tuesday, but he maintains an optimism that they could yet feature at the showpiece.
Nienaber, who will be leaving the Springboks for Irish giants Leinster at the end of the World Cup, had left Pollard and Am out based on respective calf and knee injuries, but included them in the standby group that will leave with the World Cup group on Saturday for their two warm-up games against Wales in Cardiff on 19 August and the All Blacks in London on 25 August.
Nienaber is hopeful that the two, who played a crucial role in the Springboks' 2019 Rugby World Cup success in Japan, will be able to shake off their niggles in time for the Boks' opening World Cup game against Scotland in Marseille on 10 September, if needed.
