It should never be forgotten how Fourie’s role at the World Cup went from ‘back-up’ utility forward to the second-choice hooker after an injury to Malcolm Marx. At the start of this past season, the 37-year-old continued to make an impression for the Stormers, but he was notably omitted from the Springboks’ first alignment camp of the year.
Having said that, the Springbok coaches should still want him to share his vast IP with the ‘next gen’ players, and so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he returns to the Bok mix later on in the year, particularly if there are injuries to other experienced hookers such as Marx or Mbonambi.
