Spring Break has become an economic boon across the South, from Virginia Beach right around the peninsula and on down to Galveston. Here's why one Alabama Gulf Coast town said no.
Close means close: The Florida/Alabama state line separates the jurisdiction of Orange Beach, Alabama, from that of Perdido Key, Florida. As many state-line sister towns are, Orange Beach and Perdido Key are basically one community with two governments, and it’s crucial to note that, while part of Orange Beach lies west on the Alabama mainland, a goodly eastern chunk of Orange Beach lies on the island of Perdido Key.
All this is why the irony has not been lost on any spring breaker that the city fathers of Orange Beach, whose jurisdiction begins literally feet from the Flora-Bama’s main building, have taken the curiously retrograde tack they have taken, namely, to close a huge section of their beach to spring breakers in 2021, following through with the policy this season. The Alabama section of beach around Perdido Pass is what Orange Beach closed in 2021, and again this year.
By contrast, during Prohibition in Florida, they ran liquor into the Keys from Havana, which isn’t to posit that no liquor got run into Mobile in the 1920s, but Alabama has a well-documented Bible-thumping, drier approach to life than Florida could ever hope to muster. It’s to be hoped that the Alabama judiciary and the state’s busy defense attorneys would have a say about how that railroad gets run. Be that as it may, the municipality also posted a equally welcoming shortlist of other rules and regs for behavior on the sections of beach that the city fathers have not closed, a list that prominently forbids any alcohol.
