Spotlight on Ottawa Redblacks rookies in pre-season game vs. Toronto Argos
One of the great position battles is at running back. Devonte Williams and Jackson Bennett are back from last season. Newcomers Ante Milanovic-Litre, De’Montre Tuggle and Amlicar Polk are also in the mix. All except for Bennett will play Thursday.“He has a great lower centre of gravity, he’s got a powerful punch when he’s in protection,” Dyce said. “He’s got great feet, whether he’s running or catching the ball, and he’s very decisive in what he does.
Asked about his strengths, he said: “I’m a pretty shifty back. I’ve got good vision and a quick burst. And, I like to believe I have a high IQ for the game.” “But I am so happy we drafted him because he’s shown outstanding skills both as a runner and on special teams. He’s a guy who takes great pride in special teams play. It’s probably something that’s a little unsung, but he played the boundary corner for us on our kickoff team and guys were able to make tackles. Josh White made two tackles, but that was because of Amlicar setting a strong edge to the boundary taking on his block with correct leverage, allowing his teammate to be successful.
While he has graduated, Polk has a year of college football eligibility remaining. While that could be the direction the Redblacks are leaning, it will be tough to send him back because of the impression he’s made in training camp.
