Look, to be in the running as one of the most inept, ineffectual governmental bureaucracies in Canada takes some special level of incompetence. That’s embarrassing enough. Sport Canada, though, might have just taken a Secretariat-sized lead down the stretch.
In reality, its mandate is not quite that limited. Officially, per Sport Canada’s own website, the organization’s programs are meant to “support our sport system at the national level, provide financial assistance to our high-performance athletes, advance the objectives of the Canadian Sport Policy, and help Canadian organizations host sport events that create opportunities for Canadians to compete at the national and international level.
Programs meant ostensibly to prevent the continuing, toxic junior-hockey culture everyone has known about in this country for decades. Whether all NSOs do carry them out, or none do, Sport Canada wants us to know it has no way to know. Wonderful.
