A new Alabama lottery plan's sponsor is optimistic after it cleared its first hurdle.
Rep. Chip Brown, a Republican from Mobile County, talks about his proposal for an Alabama lottery. The sponsor of a new proposal for an Alabama lottery said he was optimistic this morning after his plan cleared the first step in the legislative process.
Asked why he waited so late in the legislative session to introduce the bill, Brown said he was working on other legislation and also wanted to see what was proposed in the Senate and noted that his plan is different. Brown’s plan has 12 Republican co-sponsors in the House. It takes more than 60 votes in the House to approve a constitutional amendment.
Godfrey cited statistics indicating that lottery tickets are sold in disproportionately large numbers in zip codes with low household incomes. He talked about the astronomical adds against winning a lottery jackpot. Rep. Berry Forte, D-Eufaula, spoke in favor of the bill. Forte said he lives three miles from the Georgia state line, where lottery tickets are available.Forte said he campaigned for Gov. Don Siegelman’s lottery proposal, which voters rejected almost 23 years ago.
