The advanced methods employed by the team during their study helped them to investigate how "variations in viscosity and shear rates affect sperm behavior at the single-cell level, which was not possible using traditional methods,” said Reza Nosrati of Monash University and senior study author, in aResearchers found that biochemical and biophysical signals inside the reproductive canal work as filters against low-quality sperm and as navigation systems for high-quality sperm to reach the...

However, due to the limits of traditional microscopy methods and population-level research, it is still unknown how fluid flow and viscosity combine to impact sperm flagellar beating behavior at the single-cell level. Furthermore, present clinical practices rely heavily on low-viscosity medium and stagnant flow conditions, even though the practical benefits of adopting physiologically appropriate settings may be considerable.

According to researchers, in environments with lower viscosity, the speed and energy usage of sperm were less affected by the fluid's flow. "But in high-viscosity media, an increase in shear rate from 0 to 6 per second at 75 millipascal seconds reduced the flagellar curvature by 20 percent, and the flagellar beating frequency was highest at a shear rate of 3 per second, which is favorable for sperm rheotaxis," said the statement.
