Since 2019-20, the government increased spending on personnel by over 30 per cent, and that number is expected to grow even further after new labour deals are reached with over two dozen public sector bargaining units.
That’s according to the latest report from the Parliamentary Budget Officer, a non-partisan office of Parliament that provides financial and economic analysis. The PBO says Ottawa spent, on average, $125,300 per employee during the last fiscal year, a 6.5 per cent increase from 2019-20. Staffing levels across the public service also expanded by 31,227 full-time employees over the past two fiscal years, an 8.2 per cent increase from 2019-20.
