THUNDER BAY — A 51-year-old man faces a stunt driving charge for going nearly double the speed limit within 200 metres of the city police station.

Thunder Bay police said officers were conducting traffic patrol near Central Avenue and Balmoral Street Monday morning after receiving public complaints about speeding in the area, when they saw a pickup truck travelling at a high rate of speed. Police said traffic radar showed the vehicle was going 93 kilometres per hour, with the roadway having a posted speed limit of 50 kilometres per hour.

The driver received a court summons for stunt driving and was issued a 30-day licence suspension, while the vehicle was impounded for 14 days. On roadways with a speed limit of less than 80 kilometres per hour, stunt driving charges can be laid for exceeding that limit by 40 kilometres per hour or more.
