Speculation by U.S. government officials that Ukraine International Airlines’ flight PS 752 may have been inadvertently shot down by Iran—makes 3rd-party review critical
In an address, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada confirmed having intelligence that suggested that Iran had shot down the plane, possibly by accident. He said Canada had asked to be active in the ongoing investigation.
In its preliminary report, Iran’s CAO, which takes the lead in the investigation under ICAO guidelines, discounted “unlawful actions” as causing the crash. The investigators have reported that both the black boxes have been located and, while they are damaged by fire are “in good conditions.” What Iran’s accident report shows is that, at least on the surface, investigators are adhering to aviation’s rules and guidelines following a crash.
That the NTSB and Boeing have not asked to participate is perhaps unsurprising given the current tensions between the U.S., but that shouldn’t impede a proper investigation being carried out.emphasized the importance of avoiding speculation
