Rep. Jim Jordan, the designated candidate for Speaker of the House by the House Republican Caucus, is attempting to force a vote in the speaker election Tuesday
Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, arrives for a caucus meeting of Republican House members on Capitol Hill, Thursday, Oct. 12, 2023 in Washington. , according to multiple sources.
Scalise, who has been a member of House Republican leadership for nearly a decade, won the nominating vote Wednesday among his caucus by a thin margin to Jordan, 113 to 99. However, he failed to garner further support from his colleagues following the internal election, leading to his withdraw.
Burchett's comments reflect a theory held by Washington insiders and observers that Jordan and his team will force the hold outs to go on public record with their opposition, then fan the flames of outrage over said opposition."What I would really recommend to Jordan's allies too, is a lot of them have mounted this high pressure campaign," Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, explained on CNN. "They're gonna whip up Twitter against the people who are against Jordan.
Jordan's strategy does appear to be working, on entrenching the opposition. A senior House Republican who opposes Jordan's speaker bidSunday he believes there are around 40 "no" votes and he personally knew of at least 20 fellow House Republicans who would go to the floor and block Jordan's path to the gavel.
