South Africa extends the registration deadline for spaza shops until February 28, 2025, providing more time for owners to comply with health regulations.

The South African government, in consultation with President Cyril Ramaphosa, has extended the registration deadline for all spaza shops until February 28, 2025. This decision comes after the initial 21-day registration period, which was met with complaints from many spaza shop owners regarding the limited timeframe.

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) confirmed the extension, noting that 392 registration centers were established across all nine provinces during the initial period. Out of these, 19,386 applications were approved, while 1,041 were closed due to non-compliance with health regulations.\The outrage over foreign-owned spaza shops is not new, but it intensified following the death of five children on October 8th
