The centerpiece Space Center Houston's expansion will bee Lunar Mars Immersive Experience and Learning Center, which is to include simulated cosmic terrains of the Moon and Mars.Houstonians who want to see astronauts bobbing along the lunar surface or Martian surface will soon be able to do so, without being sponsored by a billionaire, or encountering any pesky time lags.
Space Center Houston on Tuesday unveiled its new Facilities Master Plan, designed to support research and training in the growing space industry–and give visitors a chance to observe both. The centerpiece of the new facility will be the Lunar Mars Immersive Experience and Learning Center, located on a 100-acre site. The center is to include two enclosed simulated cosmic terrains, of the Moon and Mars, as well as modular surface labs and STEM -- science, technology, engineering and math -- learning centers. Space fans will be able to observe the astronaut training for themselves, via an elevated exhibit hall overlooking the two alien terrains.
The global space industry is projected to quadruple in size by 2050. As it stands, As stands, says Space Center Houston, 17 of the world’s top 20 aerospace manufacturers have a presence in the state. William T. Harris, its CEO, said that Space Center Houston is shifting its focus, ”from being a curator of past achievements to also facilitating new feats in space.”
