Soweto CIT guard charged with murder after shooting at mall

A cash-in-transit security officer was arrested at Jabulani Mall in Soweto on Tuesday afternoon after he allegedly shot and killed a civilian in a scuffle.

It is alleged that a 33-year-old man tried to disarm the CIT guard, during which the security guard’s firearm went off. “It is reported that the security officer was on duty loading money in an ATM when he requested patrons queuing at the ATM to make a safe way for him, but one of them refused and this led to a scuffle between the two.

“In the process, the trigger of the firearm was pulled, and the bullet hit the patron,” says Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.The security officer is expected to appear in the Protea Magistrate’s Court soon.
