youngsters for almost three decades, is gearing up for this year’s edition of its annual concert in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Buskaid’s success stories include Samson Diamond, one of South Africa’s top violinists and leader of the award-winning Odeion String Quartet. Diamond was barely 12 when he enrolled as the first student.Samson was my very first student; he must have been 10 or 11. He is now the top fiddle player in this country. He came from very difficult circumstances, actually, and was the first of our students to be sent to England, when he was 17.

She recalled how, back then, the now globally acclaimed music school occupied one room in a priest’s office not too far from a taxi rank. This meant becoming accustomed to frequent gunshots. We had to keep proving ourselves and we eventually found a small piece of land where we built the music school.

Among the challenges they faced was the maintenance of instruments, because they had no one to repair the equipment. Bass decided to acquire this skill.For the first time since its inception, the ensemble will present the work of a woman composer – Florence Price from the US. Price was the first black American woman whose music was premiered by an orchestra in that country.

To date, the ensemble has delivered 26 international performances and, since joining the school, Goodman christens Colombia as being the most indelible. Buskaid toured that country and Brazil in 2017.
