Police have declared a 'major incident' in Southport after reports of a stabbing and a 'number of reported casualties'.
Police officers are at the scene in Southport and have cordoned off Hart Street.People are being told not to go anywhere near Hart Street, ourShe says:"We do understand armed police were involved in the detaining of this man and he is now in custody."
She says an air ambulance was involved and is circling the area and there are reports that some people are hearing two helicopters."This is a hugely shocking incident to have unfolded in the summer holidays."Shopkeepers are closing their stores in response to the incident, with some saying they've told staff to stay inside.
Karolina Kaminska, owner of RK Tanning on Eastbank Street in Southport, has told the Liverpool Echo:"I can't believe what's happening.'Lock your windows, lock your doors,' shout local residents - though police say threat is containedOne woman who lives minutes away from Hart Street has told the Liverpool ECHO:"It was about 12.20pm, I think, and we heard loads of sirens and then there was a helicopter circling above.
"Then the messages started to go around the local WhatsApp groups, saying 'lock your windows, lock your doors', we were told a man was running around stabbing people. "We are all absolutely terrified, panicking and sick with worry - everyone is trying to reach anyone they know in the area. I don't know how this can happen on a Monday lunchtime."13:34:53North West Ambulance Service has said it has"dispatched multiple resources" following reports of"multiple stabbings".Police and emergency services in SouthportPolice said they had arrested a man after the"major incident" and there is no wider threat to the public.
