Manchester last month rolled out its first publicly owned buses since the 1980s
Andy Burnham wants to extend Manchester's new publicly-owned transport network to cover as far as Southport and West Lancashire.
The rollout will spread across the region until 2025 and Mr Burnham has already stated his ambitions to continue this growth. In particular, he discussed at prospect of the Southport-Manchester Victoria line connecting to the network. That route passes through areas including Burscough, Parbold and Wigan but links between Southport and Manchester have long been the source of frustration for passengers due to axed services and frequently delayed and cancelled trains.
"That is a priority for us to do that." Mr Burnham compared the idea to the TFL Overground system where trains start outside London but join onto the Underground system. "That is one our targets to bring into the Bee Network so it would mean, if you live in let's say Horwich and you got a bus into Bolton interchange, you could get off there and get on the train. And then it would all be one journey so that's what we hope to do between 2025-2027 sort of time."
