Sudu Kiash, the top achiever from Southdowns College's 2024 matric class, shares his experience and offers valuable advice for students entering their final year of high school.
Southdowns College top achiever Sudu Kiash received nine distinctions for the IEB 2024 matric class. The 18-year-old credited discipline and a strong work ethic for achieving a well-rounded 100% in Maths and his impressive overall results. Kiash advised the next matric cohort to work hard, ease off the stress, and most importantly, enjoy the academic year as matric only comes once in a lifetime.
Although the academic year was met with an intense amount of work, Kiash described matric as his best year socially because he built relationships and honed his leadership skills. He reflected on the challenges of prelims, stating they were extremely challenging but ultimately prepared him well for the finals. The finals were intensive, definitely requiring a lot of discipline and a strong work ethic. Kiash's biggest highlight was being a prefect, as his leadership skills were tested when he led both the school's robotics team and the leadership department. He acknowledged the emotional toll of the Covid-19 pandemic, losing many loved ones, which affected his academics, particularly while adapting to online learning. Despite these setbacks, he learned the importance of discipline in his work, even amidst constant distractions. Looking towards the future, Kiash aspires to be a successful person financially while pursuing a career aligned with his interests and talents. He hopes to study Actuarial Sciences at UP because it offers a gateway to financial well-being and caters to his strong interest in Mathematics
