Pope Francis will give a speech at the end of the retreat on Thursday afternoon.

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and First Vice President-designate Riek Machar, the leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition , are into the second day of a two-day peace retreat at the Vatican courtesy of the pope.

The invite from Pope Francis followed a visit by Kiir to the Vatican last March after which it was announced that four designated vice presidents – Riek Machar, James Wani Igga, Taban Deng Gai, and Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior would hold talks facilitated by the Catholic Church.
