Anti-Sudanese protests in Juba, South Sudan, escalated into widespread looting and vandalism, leading authorities to impose a nighttime curfew and deploy heavy security. The unrest stems from reports of civilian deaths in Sudan's ongoing civil war, prompting calls for restraint and protection for refugees.

Anti-Sudanese protests in Juba, South Sudan , descended into chaos on Thursday, prompting authorities to impose a nighttime curfew and deploy heavy security. The unrest erupted following reports of the deaths of 29 South Sudan ese citizens in neighboring Sudan earlier in the week. Sudan's army was accused of killing civilians during the recapture of the city of Wad Madani from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, escalating the brutal civil war that has ravaged the region since April 2023.

Videos circulating online fueled the protests in South Sudan, leading to police firing warning shots to prevent the looting of Sudanese-owned shops. An AFP journalist witnessed extensive looting and vandalism of foreign-owned businesses and restaurants in the Jebel and Munuki neighborhoods of the capital city. While calm was restored on Friday, a heavy police presence maintained a tense atmosphere throughout. In response to the escalating violence, police chief Abraham Manyuat announced a curfew starting at 6:00 pm on state television. He expressed concerns about potential unrest targeting Custom and Konyo markets, which house a significant portion of the country's food supplies. Manyuat warned that any looting or fire at these markets would have disastrous consequences for both citizens and the government. South Sudan, already grappling with chronic instability, violence, and extreme poverty, is further burdened by severe flooding and a massive influx of refugees fleeing the war in Sudan. President Salva Kiir's office issued a statement urging restraint and emphasizing the need to protect individuals seeking refuge from violence. Kiir appealed to the public to allow the governments of South Sudan and Sudan to address the situation.
