She said: “Councillor Katy Loudon and I are speaking today on behalf of the SNP group in support of the right to strike in opposition to the anti-democratic and anti-union legislation recently passed in Westminster by the Conservatives, namely the Strikes Minimum Service Bill which received Royal Assent last year.
“I believe as a lifelong trade unionist and having worked both for the TGWU, now called Unite, and the EST in the past, that it is important that this council clearly states that it will exercise its right to discretion in relation to this legislation and will not use it in the event of any relevant disputes. It’s also worth noting that these regulations could permit a reach of UK ministers into areas that are clearly devolved such as education and this is troubling in itself.
The Labour group welcomed the plans with council leader Joe Fagan committing to stand with the workforce. “More to the matter I think it would be remiss of us to ignore the college lectures and further education staff that are currently engaging in strike action for better conditions and fair pay. And I’d like to offer our solidarity to our further education staff, college lecturers and to our learners whilst discussing this. But I wholeheartedly welcome the motion and I thank the colleagues across the room for bringing this forward.
