Many Koreans still feel they must follow a narrow script for success. Covid-19 will not help people to try something new

was a young girl, her path to success seemed clearly defined. “My parents said, study hard, get into a good university and everything will be fine, so I was a good daughter and did that,” she says. “But when I finished I didn’t know what to do and my parents didn’t either and I realised nobody had ever taught me how to make decisions for myself.”

Today her work is exhibited in London and New York as well as Seoul and her country is lavishing awards on her. Her mother, who for years was horrified by her daughter’s life choices, is at last proud of her. Ms Park won’t quite say that she is happy. “But I’m living the life I want.” This process is far from complete. Many Koreans still feel they must follow a narrow script for success: get into a good university, get a job at a, toil uncomplainingly until retirement. The pressure to do the same thing as everyone else is strong. “We care a lot more about external validation of our choices than about our personal assessment,” says Suh Eun-kook, who studies life satisfaction at Yonsei University in Seoul.

Economically, deep crises, such as the one that is likely to result from the pandemic, tend to promote market consolidation. Large companies usually find it easier to weather economic storms, both because they are more likely to have bigger cash reserves than smaller firms, and because they are more effective at lobbying the government to include industry-specific measures that benefit them in fiscal-stimulus packages.

The Best South Korean Beauty Lip Tints Perfect For InstagramThe Best South Korean Beauty Lip Tints Perfect For InstagramTint Type: stain\r\nShades Available: 5\r\nWear: all day, baby\r\nYes, Chateau Labiotte is a Korean makeup brand moonlighting as a fake French winery. And yes, the result is the cutest makeup vessel I\u2019ve ever seen\u2014a bizarrely lifelike wine bottle for ants. But this is also the perfect lip tint. This tint looks and lasts like a traditional stain, but doesn\u2019t have that bitter taste or drying, astringent feel typical in other products. It\u2019s also easy to apply: the sheer formula takes its time to dry down, so you can blend outwards for a popsicle look or fix any spots out of bounds. (You can even dab the doe-foot applicator along your cheeks for a flush that lasts.) It didn\u2019t grab on to my dry spots in a gross looking way. And, OK, have you seen the packaging?! The shade Merlot Burgundy RD03, a translucent stunner somewhere between plum and brick, is the one to grab.
