KZN south coast is ready to welcome back holidaymakers for the festive season, having retained the blue flag beach status 🚩 ECR_Newswatch SouthCoast

The internationally recognised blue flag programme is an eco-award given to beaches that meet the strict standards of safe bathing conditions, cleanliness, the provision of amenities and environmental management.

Marina, Trafalgar, Southport, Umzumbe, Ramsgate, and Hibberdene are beaches in the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality that have all received their status for the 2022/2023 season.Pennington, Rocky Bay, Preston, Umthwalume in Umdoni Municipality, and St Michael's Beach secured pilot status. CEO of SCTIE Phelisa Mangcu says the recognition was thanks to municipal and community partnerships.

This is not only the highest number for KZN but two of these have noted the longevity in the programme. Marina Beach for 21 consecutive years and Trafalgar beach for 11 consecutive years. We are proud to retain the status of our blue flag beaches as this will draw tourists to our destination for the benefit of our local economy."

Meanwhile, the KwaDukuza Municipality has started the process to build a new beach to boost tourism on the north coast. The mayor says the long-awaited project in the Nonoti area between Blythedale and Zinkwazi beaches will satisfy the demand for beach facilities there.
