Jaguars have not beaten Troy since 2017

There have been a few close calls, including a 31-24 defeat at Troy in 2021 and a 10-6 loss in Mobile the following year. In the latter game, South Alabama receiver Devin Voisin was at the center of a pair of controversial plays that still bother him. South Alabama quarterback Gio Lopez is only a redshirt freshman, so he doesn’t have the psychological scars that some of his teammates do after so many losses to Troy. However, he made his first career start against the Trojans last year, when Bradley was sidelined by a knee injury.
Both South Alabama and Troy have first-year head coaches, Applewhite for the Jaguars and Gerad Parker for the Trojans. The last two Troy head coaches — Chip Lindsey and Jon Sumrall — went a combined 5-0 in the “Battle for the Belt.” “Defensively, they change things up a lot. The mix their fronts, they mix their coverages. They’ve got good size inside. They’re a really solid defense. Offensively, they can run the ball. I know they’ve had the issues with injury at quarterback, but I think they’ve got big guys outside that can make plays. They’ve got some speed outside that we’ve got to make sure we have eyes on. Their backs are good players that can make people miss in open space.
