South Alabama's basketball season ends with a 75-71 loss to Little Rock in the Sun Belt tournament.
Updated: Mar. 03, 2022, 6:20 p.m. |Little Rock's Jordan Jefferson, right, dribbles between South Alabama's Charles Manning, center and Alex Anderson during the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Basketball tournament at the the Pensacola Bay Center on Thursday. Little Rock somehow made up 35 points on South Alabama in three weeks, and it was just enough to end the Jaguars’ season in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference basketball tournament.
South Alabama cut the lead back to three on Charles Manning’s running one-hander with 1:04 left, then got the ball back after Little Rock was called for a shot-clock violation. Manning — who led all scorers with 26 points — was fouled on his way to the rim, but missed his second free throw after making the first, and White knocked down two for the Trojans to close the game out.
“I think the easiest thing to say is ‘why don’t you just go man-to-man,’” Riley said. “But this isn’t a YMCA pickup game. If I had a team that could really guard man-to-man, we would do that. … We don’t guard the ball very well. We don’t take away the post very well, and they were big inside. … Our ball-screen defense is not very good. So the zone, for the last two weeks, has been able to keep us in games, hold people to percentages. Then we get down here and it doesn’t.
“Obviously, we didn’t have our leading scorer, and that’s a big difference from the game at our place to today,” Riley said. “But that’s no excuse. We’ve known he was out since last week. We just made a ton of mistakes early and allowed them to get in a rhythm making shots. It hurt us. When we played them last time, we made some of these same mistakes and they didn’t make us pay. Today, they did.”
