South African telecoms companies are struggling, and have to adjust their strategies to remain competitive.

South Africa’s telecoms sector faces a saturated market, infrastructure issues, and falling share prices, forcing companies to adapt their strategies.

The listed South African telecoms services sector came under pressure in 2023, falling 29%, far exceeding the All-Share Index’s 3% decline. The trend has continued into 2024. MTN’s market value is R141 billion, and Vodacom’s is R191 billion, far ahead of Telkom, the third-biggest player. The key Nigerian market has seen the naira plummet nearly 70% in value, which weighed MTN’s share price.

Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub described the company’s recent performance in South Africa as satisfactory but pointed out that load-shedding in 2022 hit the company hard. Mobile virtual network operators are companies that do not own a mobile spectrum licence but offer cellular services under their brand name.
