Network performance improvements have made it possible to rely on indoor 5G units, leading to a shift away from outdoor routers in South Africa.
Mobile network operators in South Africa have shifted away from outdoor routers for their fixed 5G products. Network performance improvements have made it easier to ensure reliable connectivity with indoor units. Initially, outdoor routers were common with fixed-5G packages to guarantee the best reception. With limited 5G towers, many homes were too far for a consistent high-speed connection using indoor routers.
Rain, the first mobile network to launch consumer 5G service in November 2019, offered a weatherproof outdoor router. It featured a metal bracket for wall or pole mounting outside homes, along with a long Ethernet cable for connecting indoor Wi-Fi routers. Customers needed to follow tutorials and use signal-finding software to position the outdoor CPE for optimal performance. While these tools helped, the setup was complex and expensive for Rain as they provided technicians to assist with signal reliability. MyBroadband forums were filled with Rain users sharing advice and configurations for their outdoor routers, turning the intended plug-and-play solution into a technical learning experience. Although Rain introduced a smaller indoor router later, it continued offering outdoor routers for customers farther from base stations for several years
