Gayton McKenzie, South Africa's Minister of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, has attributed the scarcity of black batsmen in the country's cricket to the prohibitive cost of batting equipment. He expressed his desire to increase investment in school sports, particularly in rural areas, to provide equal opportunities for aspiring athletes.

South African Minister of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Gayton McKenzie recently sparked debate with his candid assessment of the country's cricket transformation objectives. During a characteristically outspoken interview, McKenzie outlined his goals for 2025 and addressed pressing issues within South African sports.

He dismissed criticism regarding his international travel expenses, arguing that networking with global sporting leaders is crucial for projecting success and should not be overshadowed by concerns over seemingly insignificant amounts spent.McKenzie also raised concerns about the dominance of Indian businesses in owning all six Betway SA20 franchises, emphasizing the need for greater South African representation in the competition. He further highlighted the disparity between the number of black bowlers and batters in South African cricket. McKenzie suggested that the high cost of batting equipment, including helmets, guards, and other protective gear, acts as a barrier to entry for aspiring black batsmen. He contrasted this with the relative affordability of cricket balls, noting the abundance of black bowlers compared to batters. While acknowledging the limited success of black African batsmen at the international level, barring captain Temba Bavuma, McKenzie pointed to a growing pool of talent emerging in the domestic scene. He cited examples of black African batsmen occupying top order positions in the CSA 4-Day competition, including Sinethemba Qeshile of the Warriors, who sits sixth in the batting rankings. To bridge the gap in access to resources and facilities, McKenzie pledged to increase spending on school sports in rural areas, emphasizing the importance of nurturing young talent from an early age. He stated that neglecting school sport would be reckless and detrimental to the future of South African sports
