After a 30-year hiatus, the South African Grand Prix is on track to make a comeback to the Formula One calendar in 2027.
The South African Grand Prix could return to the Formula One calendar as early as 2027. The last time fans experienced wheel-to-wheel F1 action was in 1993 at the iconic Kyalami venue. Grandstands were packed with fans waving team flags in anticipation of the South African Grand Prix . Williams driver and four-time champion Alain Prost returned from a sabbatical and won the GP, fending off challenges from Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna.
It's been over 30 years since then, but recent years have seen renewed hope for F1's return to South Africa. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has been vocal about the need for F1 to expand its reach into Africa. On Wednesday, Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture Gayton McKenzie announced a 13-person bid steering committee, marking a significant step towards F1 returning to the country. Previously, the idea of F1 returning to South Africa seemed unlikely due to financial concerns. However, this new development suggests a strong possibility of the country hosting this prestigious event once again
