Auditor General Tsakani Maluleke has reported that government departments and public entities in South Africa have overspent by R38 billion in the past financial year. This comes as part of a larger irregular spending issue that has cost R14.3 billion over the last five years, attributed to poor financial management and accountability.
In the past financial year, government departments and public entities in South Africa overspent by more than R38 billion, according to Auditor General Tsakani Maluleke . Maluleke detailed that over the last five years, R14.3 billion was spent on payments for goods never received or resources not effectively used. She attributed the increase in irregular spending to lazy and errant accounting officers and departmental heads who failed to investigate or address the improper spending.
Maluleke also urged oversight committee chairpersons to hold state officials accountable, stressing the pressure on the country’s financial status
