Rogail Joseph, a ‘two-time African U20 champion’ who hails from Worcester, came first place with a ‘personal best’ time of 55:39.Joseph wasn’t the only South African athlete to win awards at the event, as South Africa got both ‘gold and bronze in the women’s shot put’. Ashley Erasmus added ’13cm to her previous lifetime best’ with 16.98m being her attempt, receiving gold prize, while the ‘reigning African champion’, Ischke Senekal, was placed third with 16.38m.
The men’s long jump also delivered a gold medalist, with Asande Mthembu coming in first place with his jump of 7.86m, outperforming Algerian ‘triple jump silver medallist’ Yasser Mohammed Triki. South African was ranked third on the medal table on 23 March 2024, with 32 gold medals, 32 silver medals and 42 bronze medals, totaling to 106 medals won overall at the African Games.
