Opensignal's new Global Network Excellence Index ranks South Africa as the leading African nation but only 64th globally. While 5G download speeds are impressive, overall network performance and consistency need improvement.
The digital divide continues to be an issue in South Africa, particularly in ensuring universal internet access. Understanding how the country compares globally in network performance is crucial. Opensignal, a network analytics company, recently released its inaugural Global Network Excellence Index, offering valuable insights into mobile markets worldwide. This comprehensive ranking system evaluates infrastructure readiness, user experience, and the ability to support future digital demands.
The Index considered four key metrics: 4G/5G availability, excellent consistent quality, 4G download speeds, and 5G download speeds. Data from these metrics was used to create an overall ranking of 137 countries. Opensignal emphasizes that this ranking serves as a valuable resource for network operators, policymakers, regulators, and consumers, shedding light on which markets are truly future-proof and capable of delivering seamless digital experiences in an increasingly interconnected world.South Africa, unsurprisingly, holds the top position among African nations in the Index. While this achievement reflects the competitive landscape of local networks, the country ranks 64th globally. Interestingly, South Africa's 5G download speed outperforms its 4G download speed, despite significant investment in 4G infrastructure compared to 5G. In terms of Excellent Consistent Quality, South Africa sits in the middle of the rankings at 69. This suggests that the local network experience for South Africans fluctuates between excellent and poor. Opensignal's findings highlight the need for continued improvement in overall network performance and consistency within South Africa. Though ranked as the leading African nation, the country still has ground to cover to reach the global frontrunners
