South Africa is taking a major step in its fight against gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide with the upcoming release of a public register listing convicted sexual offenders and GBV perpetrators.

Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi announced that the list will be accessible by the end of February, marking a significant move toward increased transparency and accountability.

She highlighted that the new register aims to protect vulnerable groups, particularly children, by giving parents and communities access to vital information about offenders. Alongside the register, the government is also focusing on enhancing the justice system’s response to GBV. Plans are underway to upgrade 100 district courts with specialised services forsurvivors, ensuring that experts are available to provide support, counselling and a sensitive approach to handling such cases.
