President Cyril Ramaphosa announces a global diplomatic push to clarify South Africa's position on crucial foreign policy issues, including its stance on the war in Ukraine, civil conflicts, and support for Palestine.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is preparing to dispatch envoys across the globe on a diplomatic mission to clarify South Africa 's stance on a range of critical foreign policy issues. This initiative aims to articulate South Africa 's objectives during its presidency of the G20 bloc of nations.
In an unprecedented move, Ramaphosa extensively outlined the nation's foreign policy positions in his State of the Nation Address (SONA), following escalating tensions with the new US administration and the tragic loss of South African soldiers deployed to the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, on Thursday night, Ramaphosa specifically addressed the country's perspective on several geopolitical matters, including the conflict in Ukraine, ongoing civil wars on the continent, and South Africa's unwavering support for Palestine.'The cornerstone pillars of our foreign policy remain the promotion of human rights, peace and camaraderie, and the strengthening of fair trade and investment relationships with other nations,' he stated. In response to unsubstantiated accusations from US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio this week, regarding South Africa's alleged land grabs, Ramaphosa remained steadfast. 'We, as South Africans, are a resilient people, and we will not be intimidated. We will speak with one voice in defense of our national interests, our sovereignty, and our constitutional democracy,' he asserted. Ramaphosa indicated that his delegation of envoys would engage with key stakeholders on various matters that directly impact South African interests
