The Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) has announced that 10 independent candidates will be allowed to run for Parliament in the 2024 national election. This marks the first time independents will be included on the ballot in South Africa.

Independent candidates contesting for seats in the provincial legislatures are: Bongani Cibi and Tshepo Mogano , Ramotswabodi Sesing , Thanasagren Moodley and Matsobane Mokonyane and Ndou in Limpopo. Sesing was nominated as an independent, but also appears on the list of the Economic Liberators Forum South Africa’s party list.
If an independent wants to be elected to a provincial legislature, they can only contest in the province where they are registered to vote. However, it’s easier to win as an independent candidate in a ward — the stakes are considerably higher in a national election.“We have not seen much movement and visibility of independents — maybe now that the IEC has . We know that elections are expensive — we know this from political parties.
