South Africa’s presidency said Vladimir Putin would not attend the Brics summit in August Vladimir Putin will not attend the summit of the Brics group of nations in Johannesburg next month, the South African presidency has confirmed.

The Russian President will instead be represented by foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, officials said on Wednesday. It comes after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Mr Putin in March over alleged war crimes in Ukraine. As a signatory to the ICC, South Africa would be obliged to arrest the Russian leader should he travel to the country.
