South Africa’s unemployment rate has worsened, with several provinces seeing large increases in their unemployed population.
According to Stats SA’s Quarterly Labour Force Survey, the official unemployment rate increased by 0.6 percentage points from 32.9% in Q1 2024 to 33.5% in Q2 2024.
“This is partly because women are more likely to take on household duties, child-rearing, and other responsibilities that limit their opportunities in the labour market,” said the statistics agency. However, the data shows a general increase in labour force participation rates for both men and women between Q2 2014 and Q2 2024.
