Rayyan Ebrahim , South Africa's top-performing matriculant in the class of 2024, hails from Pinelands High School in the Western Cape. Ebrahim, the country's top public school learner, credits his success to the unwavering support of his parents and teachers. He received an invitation from Basic Education minister Siviwe Gwarube to join 39 other exceptional learners for a celebratory breakfast recognizing their outstanding achievements.
Pinelands High School proudly announced on Facebook that Ebrahim secured a spot in the Top 1% of candidates for Further Studies Mathematics (FSM) Standard (Calculus and Algebra) nationwide – a remarkable feat! The school emphasized that FSM is a demanding academic subject administered by the IEB as part of the IEB International Secondary Certificate, and it is awarded separately from the NSC qualification.Ebrahim achieved a stellar 99% A* in Further Studies: Mathematics Standard (Calculus & Algebra). He shared his study habits, explaining that he dedicated time to this subject in the mornings when he felt most productive, focused, and energetic. Past papers, study guides, and YouTube videos proved invaluable resources for him. Furthermore, he actively participated in extra classes at Pinelands and offered tutoring to his fellow students. 'I have this drive to strive for excellence in everything I do,' he stated. 'The support from my parents, teachers, and community members reinforced the belief that I could excel.'Matriculation is undoubtedly one of the most pivotal years in the South African education system. The results determine a student's eligibility for higher education and the pursuit of advanced studies. Many learners face numerous challenges, some potentially life-altering, during this demanding period. However, they often emerge victorious. Fortunately for Ebrahim, he didn't encounter any major obstacles, except for occasional feelings of overwhelm, which he effectively managed by reminding himself that his best efforts were sufficient and that all he needed to do was give his all.
