President Cyril Ramaphosa's State of the Nation Address (SONA) is expected to be dominated by geopolitical concerns following recent international developments and the tragic loss of South African soldiers in the DRC.
CAPE TOWN - While South Africans anticipate President Cyril Ramaphosa to prioritize domestic challenges in his State of the Nation Address, geopolitical concerns might overshadow the discussion. This comes after a tumultuous week where South Africa dominated global news headlines following US President Donald Trump's allegations that the government was confiscating land and engaging in 'terrible things'.
Adding to the international spotlight, 14 South African soldiers, deployed as part of a peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), perished in a combat zone, their remains still awaiting repatriation. This week's SONA may see critical domestic issues like unemployment, the persistent water crisis, and the state of local government overshadowed by these geopolitical complexities.President Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation regarding the situation concerning the troops in eastern DRC, with Professor Kedibone Phago from the University of the North West highlighting the delicate balancing act between domestic priorities and South Africa's standing on the global stage. Phago emphasizes the need to understand the ramifications of seeking US intervention in South Africa's affairs, warning that those who benefit from US markets through trade agreements like AGOA could ultimately suffer. 'The very same people with access to US markets through the trade deals SA has with the US, such as AGOA, may be the people who are going to suffer,' Phago cautioned. This will mark Ramaphosa's first SONA since the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU) following the African National Congress (ANC)'s substantial electoral setback in last year's elections. Despite experiencing tensions, the GNU remains intact and is likely to be a key point of emphasis in the president's address
