Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi vehemently refutes a City Press report alleging that the ANC plans to propose a compromise on the implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI) system. The report claimed the ANC intended to mandate all employees to join medical aid schemes to control costs and alleviate public healthcare strain. Motsoaledi denies the allegations, calling them unfounded and ridiculous.

South African Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has strongly refuted a City Press report alleging that the African National Congress (ANC) plans to propose a compromise on the implementation of the National Health Insurance ( NHI ) system. The report claimed that the ANC, during its first Cabinet Lekgotla of 2025, intended to suggest that all employees be mandated to join a medical aid scheme to curb rising health insurance costs and alleviate the pressure on the public healthcare system.

Motsoaledi, through a statement released by his department spokesperson, Foster Mohale, categorically denied the allegations, labeling them as “unfounded and ridiculous.” He emphasized that there is no such plan under consideration by either the ANC or the government. Mohale further asserted that the claims originated from either the imagination of the article's author or their unnamed sources. The Minister expressed concern about the persistent dissemination of misinformation regarding the NHI and criticized the media outlet for its reporting. He pointed out that the escalating costs of private healthcare are a known issue, but forcing medical aids to lower their prices is not a viable solution. Motsoaledi argued that this approach would be detrimental and questioned why certain media outlets continue to speculate on the private healthcare sector's cost management strategies. He stated that the recent reporting on NHI constitutes an orchestrated attack aimed at sowing confusion and discrediting the system in the public eye
