South Africa reportedly wants to delay its move away from coal,

South Africa has told rich countries backing its $8.5 billion energy transition deal that it wants to delay the closure of some units at its coal-fired power plants, people familiar with the situation said.

With blackouts often exceeding 10 hours a day, the government is under pressure to hold on to whatever generation capacity it has. Unveiled at the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, the JETP is meant to help South Africa end its dependence on coal and meet its target of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Troubled state power utility Eskom closed the dilapidated Komati plant last year and is due to close another 5 of its 14 remaining coal-fired plants by 2030.
