Of all the ransomware attacks in Africa, 40 percent happen in South Africa says ESET.
When South Africa ranks first it’s cause for the nation to celebrate. Today we bring you news of another top rank for South Africa, only this isn’t for sport, music or education, it’s about cybercrime.the company identified South Africa as the African nation most prone to ransomware and infostealer attacks in the second half of 2024. Across the entire continent, ESET found that 40 percent of ransomware attacks and around 35 percent of infostealer incidents occured in South Africa.
As an example of how at risk South Africa is, the South African Weather Service has spent must of this month recovering from a ransomware attack it suffered at the end of January. “Ransomware, infostealers, and phishing are not new threats – but they are always evolving, which means that our defences need to adapt to keep us protected.
