How Bad Is South Africa's Murder Rate? GroundUp_News: SouthAfrica

The number of murders this past year may be the highest on record. The previous highest is 1995/6 .There's currently a 4 to 5% chance that your cause of death in South Africa will be murder.by the Institute of Security Studies, South Africa now has the second highest murder rate in the world. Only Jamaica is worse. But note that many countries cannot measure their murder rate accurately. Also the number of deaths by violence in war zones are disputed and complicate things.

While murders dropped appreciably during the first year of Covid, especially during the hard lockdowns, the number of murders in 2020/21 still exceeded 2016/17. Since Bheki Cele became Minister of Police in 2018, the murder rate has increased from 36 to 46 per 100,000. In the half-decade before he took this position the situation was already deteriorating., from about 6 per 100,000 to 5.4 per 100,000, while the South African homicide rate increased dramatically over this period.

Why has the murder rate got worse? David Bruce, a widely respected researcher on violence, policing and public security, points to several possible causes: declining police numbers, the proliferation of firearms and violent organised crime. He also suggests that the worsening economy could be contributing to increased violent crime."This impact is most strongly concentrated in the four most populous provinces," he told GroundUp.

Shortening of Karpowership Contracts on the Cards in South AfricaShortening of Karpowership Contracts on the Cards in South AfricaSince 2010, Karpowership, a Turkish power producing firm, has been utilising off-shore ships as floating gas power plants. The company contracts to provide countries with power extends up to 20 years. With South Africa looking to Kapowership to assist with its load shedding crisis, concerns have been raised at the cost and the length of time of the contracts, as well as its impact on the environment. According to Rudi Dicks, head of the project management office in the Presidency and member of the National Energy Crisis Committee, the government is discussing the possibility of reducing the term for Karpowership contracts as an "emergency' measure". Dicks called for contracts of potentially five to ten years would be preferable to the initial term of 20 years. This follows a comment by Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa who recently said that contracts with emergency power producers should not last longer than three to five years. Despite being named as a preferred bidder in government's Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme in 2021 to provide over 1,200MW of power at at three of South African ports, Karpowership has also drawn criticism over its refusal of environmental authorisation for its three vessels at the selected docking sites of Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal province, Ngqura in the Eastern Cape province and Saldanha Bay in the Western Cape province. The Karpowership deal is aimed to lessen the impact of load shedding on the country which as affected the economy, most notably small businesses, with up to 64% of township small businesses stopping operations during scheduled power cuts.
